ELECTROGIG SOFTWARE INSTALLATION NOTES
VERSION 3.0.1
September 7th, 1995
Introduction
------------
Welcome to Electrogig 3D modeling products. Your ISO 9660-compliant
CD-rom contains the five products listed below, for Silicon Graphics,
Sun Microsystems, Hewlett Packard and AXIL workstations:
GIG3DGO
GIG3DGO Advanced
GIGVIZ
GIGVIZ Advanced
GIGPIX
This CD-ROM also contains example rendered Electrogig images and
animations and material for use with the GIG3DGO tutorial.
To install your Electrogig product, follow the simple installation
utility documented in these Installation Notes. You have four choices:
- update a product you already have
- install new software
- install demonstration models
- install tutorials
If you do not have a CD-ROM drive attached to your system it is
possible to backup the CD-ROM onto tape, restore the tape to a
directory on the hard-disk of your system and then install the
software from that directory.
Immediately following your installation, the core product, GIG3DGO,
works in a limited feature "demo mode". To use your software, fax
the "Password Request Form" to Electrogig or call the Electrogig
support department.
Conventions
-----------
Some text format conventions are followed throughout these instructions.
These format conventions are defined in this section.
- Keyboard keys are indicated by pointed brackets. Between these
brackets the name of a key is shown, for example, <Enter>. Some
keys are abbreviated as on popular keyboards, for example <Ctrl>.
System Requirements
-------------------
On SGI workstations, you can check your system using the System
Manager or the hinv command. On the HP, use dmesg (as root).
Consult your system administrator for similar commands on Sun
and AXIL workstations.
Internal (RAM) Memory: 32 Mb
Internal (RAM) Memory for Parametric RayTracer: 64 Mb
Swap space: 100 Mb
Swap space for Parametric RayTracer: 200 Mb
Operating system versions supported: IRIX 5.2, IRIX 5.3
Solaris 5.4 and up
HP-UX 9.0.5 and up
Before you start
----------------
Before you start your installation, make sure your workstation is
on and started up. Log in as root, and, if necessary, create a
window you can use to type commands. If you are adding additional
material to an Electrogig product that is already installed, such
as demo material (but not upgrading to a newer version), you can
log in as the gig user.
Load the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. If the CD-ROM is mounted
automatically or if you know how to mount a CD-ROM, you can skip
the next section. Instructions on mounting your CD-ROM follow.
Mounting your Electrogig CD
---------------------------
Confirm that no other application, such as cdman or cdplayer, is
using the CD-ROM drive. If another application is using the CD-ROM
drive, you must quit out of that program before you can mount your
CD-ROM.
On SGI workstations, it is recommended that you mount your
Electrogig CD-ROM using the System Manager. If this does not
work, here is another way to mount your CD-ROM.
Log in as root. Put your CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. Locate
the SCSI unit number, or address, for your CD-ROM drive using
the command:
hinv | fgrep CD <Enter>
You should see something like:
CDROM: unit 4 on SCSI controller 0
That "4" is the SCSI unit number you need to know. Next confirm
the name of the directory on which you will mount your CD-ROM.
There should be a directory named either /CDROM or /cdrom on your
workstation. You should substitute the appropriate mount directory
name for your workstation.
Now add the CD-ROM to the list of devices to be automatically
checked when the machine is started, as well as mounting the
CD-ROM for immediate use. The particular command you use depends
on what version of IRIX, the Silicon Graphics operating system
software, you are using. For IRIX 5.3, for example, you would
use mediad, but older versions might require cdromd. Check your
system to see which utility is installed. In either case, replace
the "#" with the SCSI unit number for your CD-ROM drive and be
sure to use "/CDROM" instead of "/cdrom" if that is appropriate
for your workstation.
/usr/etc/cdromd -p /dev/scsi/sc0d#10 /cdrom <Enter>
/usr/etc/cdromd -a <Enter>
or
/usr/etc/mediad -o ro -ip /dev/scsi/sc0d#10 /CDROM <Enter>
Now you should be able to change directories to the /cdrom/gig
directory.
To mount your CD-ROM on a Sun or AXIL workstation, please refer
to the manual pages of the CD-ROM driver:
man rmmount <Enter>
To mount your CD-ROM on an HP workstation, put the CD-ROM in
the drive and close the drive-door. Login as root. Start up
SAM. Select (open) the 'Disk and File Manager' menu. Select
the 'CD-ROM, Floppy, ..' menu. Verify that a CD-ROM drive is
recognized by the system, i.e. the menu should display at least
one line with the description:
SCSI CD_ROM drive
Remember the hardware path of this CD-ROM drive. Close the
'CD-ROM, Floppy, ..' window. Select the 'Local File Systems'
menu. Verify if the drive is listed in the 'Device File'
column of this menu, if not, select the 'Actions->Add' menu,
and select the CDROM_SCSI drive. Type in the hardware path of
the CD-ROM drive (mount directory path) in the window and click
'OK'. The CD-ROM is now mounted on the specified path.
Electrogig Installation
-----------------------
This section details the installation procedure for all products
contained in your Electrogig CD-ROM.
Start by confirming that you can read your CD-ROM. Using Solaris,
type:
# cd /CDROM/gig <Enter>
# ls <Enter>
On SGI or HP, just type:
# cd /cdrom <Enter>
# ls <Enter>
You should see:
README.TXT flipbook go pictures tutor.ins
demo.ins gig.ins hpgig.tar sgigig.tar tutor.tar
demo.tar gig.tar hpgo sungig.tar
On HP, these names will be appear in uppercase and with a ';1'
extention. This is caused by the way HP reads ISO 9660 CD-ROM's.
The 'hpgo' installation script will take care of this by linking
these names to normal filenames.
The files contain:
README.TXT - this file
go - installation script for SGI, Sun and AXIL
hpgo - installation script for HP
demo.ins - auxiliary installation script, installs demo files
gig.ins - auxiliary installation script, installs 3DGO
tutor.ins - auxiliary installation script, installs tutorials
demo.tar - archive containing demo files
gig.tar - archive containing 3DGO libraries
hpgig.tar - archive containing 3DGO executable for HP
sgigig.tar - archive containing 3DGO executable for SGI
sungig.tar - archive containing 3DGO executable for Sun, AXIL
tutor.tar - archive containing tutorials
flipbook - directory with TIFF flipbook directories
pictures - directory with TIFF images
Installing an Electrogig product
--------------------------------
If you are installing an Electrogig product for the first time,
follow the instructions in this section. If you are updating an
existing Electrogig installation, see the next section, "Updating
an existing Electrogig product".
The Electrogig installation utility is called "go" (on HP this
is "hpgo", appearing as "HPGO;1"). Generally, all you need to
do is type yes or no and press Enter to accept the defaults
offered. To install your software on SGI, Sun or AXIL workstations,
type:
# ./go <Enter>
On the HP, type:
# ./HPGO;1 <Enter>
The HP installation script will set up a series of links, to
cope with the uppercase filenames. Therefore, on HP workstations
only, there will appear an initial question:
Do you want to use (or install) the demo pictures and
flipbooks? (yes/no/quit)
If you type "no" here, then the demo images and flipbooks will
not be linked to more readable file names. If you type "yes",
then everything on the CD will be linked. This can take over
5 minutes. Typing "quit" aborts the installation. After linking,
the HP installation automatically continues by starting the
standard installation utility.
When the utility starts, you should see:
GIG 3DGO installation script
You are logged in as super user.
(If you only want to add demo or tutorial files to an
existing installation, login as the gig user and rerun
this script)
The Electrogig installation utility asks you what you would like
to install, step by step. You can answer yes, no, or quit the
installation utility at any of the prompts (you can also abbreviate,
using "y", "Y", "n", "N", "q" or "Q"). Any other answer, including
<Enter>, is interpreted as "yes". The utility also indicates the
disk space each package consumes. Here is an example installation:
First, the installation utility asks you if you want to install
the Tutorial models. You can use these as examples and when using
the GIG3DGO Tutorial manual.
Do you want to install the tutorial? [610 kB] (yes/no/quit)
y <Enter>
Next you are asked if you would like to install the demonstration
models.. In previous releases of Electrogig 3DGO, these used to
take up a lot of disk space. Therefore, the images and flipbook
animations have been removed from the demo installation, and can
be accessed directly from the CD-ROM (see below). The demo models
are useful examples of what you can do with Electrogig products.
Do you want to install the demo files? [36340 kB] (yes/no/quit)
y <Enter>
You are asked to confirm your choices.
installing: GIG 3DGO tutorial demo
are you sure? (yes/no/quit)
y <Enter>
By default, products are installed for use by the gig account.
It is usually best to keep things simple and use the default
gig account. If you want to use the default gig account, just
press <Enter> when asked for a user name. If you would like to
use a different account name, you can specify it by typing it
in. The installation utility will then ask for a group name
and a new home directory name. If you press <Enter> without
typing in a value, the value indicated between square brackets
will be selected.
Enter user name [gig]: gig2 <Enter>
Enter group name [giguser]: <Enter>
Enter home directory [/usr/people/gig2]: <Enter>
Install? y/n [y]: y <Enter>
The user name is the name under which you log in to work. The
group name is the name of the IRIX/Solaris/HP-UX group to which
the user belongs. The home directory is the directory of the
user; the software files will be placed under this directory.
Installing to a directory mounted over the network may result
in difficulties if the root user doesn't have all the privileges
necessary to write to the disk.
When the RenderManager is installed, the installation utility
discusses port numbers. Unless you have a particular reason
for specifying a port number, just press <Enter> and use the
default port number.
The RenderManager requires a specific port number to run.
Only change services port number if necessary.
Enter port number [9530]: <Enter>
Installing software
The software will now be installed. As the software is installed,
the name of each file is displayed. When the installation is
complete, the installation utility displays:
GIG software installation ready
This indicates a successful installation. You can now remove
your CD-ROM and store it in a safe place. Or keep it in the
CD-ROM drive to inspect the demo images and flipbooks. For
example on an SGI workstation with 3DGO installed, type:
showtiff /cdrom/gig/pictures/chicken.tif
The 'showtiff' utility is a tool that comes with the GIG
installation (also on Sun, AXIL and HP). However, the image
files can be read with any TIFF viewer, on any computer that
can access ISO 9660 CD-ROMs.
The machine number displayed at the end of your installation
is important. This is the unique number for your machine
that you will have to supply to the Electrogig Support
department in order to get your product password.
Your machine number is: 1762908568
If you lose your machine number, you can find it using the
sysinfo command (on SGI workstations):
# sysinfo -s
1762908568
On HP, use "uname -i". On Sun/AXIL, use "hostid".
Installing Electrogig through the use of icons
----------------------------------------------
On SGI, Sun and AXIL workstations it is possible to start the
installation script without having to type the "./go" command.
On SGI workstations:
double-click on the CDROM icon
double-click on the gig folder
double-click on the 'go' icon
Follow the online prompts. Default home directory is
"/usr/people/gig". If you do not want the default installation,
do not use gig as the user.
On Sun/AXIL, start OpenWindows by typing:
/usr/openwin/bin/openwin <Enter>
From the cdrom menu
double-click on the gig folder
double-click on the 'go' icon
The default home directory is "export/home/gig". If you do
not want the default installation, do not use gig as the user.
Updating an Electrogig product
------------------------------
If you already own an Electrogig product, you can update it
with the latest version using the same installation utility,
go (or ./HPGO;1 on HP workstations). Just follow the same
installation procedure described here for new products.
You will be asked:
Update existing GIG? (yes/no/quit)
Answer "y", and follow the installation prompts.
How to start your product
-------------------------
Log out of the root-account, and log in again as gig. If you
installed your product with a non-standard user name, log in
using the name you selected.
When you log in, your product should start automatically. If
it does not, you can start it manually by typing in a window:
startgig <Enter>
If you do not have a password for your product or your password
is incorrect, your product will run in demo mode only. You
will not be able to save your work or use the rendered images.
